Narayan Rane, former chief minister of Maharashtra, was the first minister to take oath as a Cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government at a ceremony held at Ashoka Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He was followed by another former chief minister Sarbanda Sonowal.

A total of 43 ministers took oath in the first major expansion of the Modi government 2.0. The reshuffle, meant to make the ministry more inclusive and to give better representation to OBCs, women and various states, started at 6.15 pm soon after Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders arrived at the presidential palace.

Among the allies inducted in the Cabinet are Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal and Pashu Pati Nath Paras of the LJP, who recently ousted his nephew Paras Paswan, son of Ram Vilas Paswan, to take over the party.

The reshuffle was preceded by a slew of resignations by ministers, including Harshvardhan, Ramesh Pokhriyal, Prakash Javadekar and Ravi Shankar Prasad.
