Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also remembered as ‘Mahatma Gandhi’ and ‘Bapu’ was born on October 2, 1869. His birthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. Hailed as the ‘Father of the Nation’, he was one of the pioneers during India’s struggle for independence.

He believed in the idea of non-violence and preached it all his life. Apart from fighting for India’s independence, he also fought racism, caste system and the practice of untouchability. 

Interestingly, his birthday is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2007.
