When%20India%20attained%20independence%20in%201947%2C%20on%20August%2015%2C%20Goa%20wasn%27t%20a%20part%20of%20the%20Indian%20Union.%20In%20fact%2C%20it%20was%20not%20until%20December%2019%2C%201961%2C%20that%20Goa%20was%20liberated%20from%20Portuguese%20operation.

Portugal%20annexed%20Goa%20in%201510%20and%20ruled%20over%20it%20for%20around%20450%20years.%20Following%20several%20failed%20rounds%20of%20failed%20negotiations%2C%20the%20then%20Prime%20Minister%20Jawaharlal%20Nehru%20ordered%20military%20operation.

It%20was%20dubbed%20%u2018Operation%20Vijay%u2019.

After%20a%20brief%20operation%20lasting%2036%20hours%2C%20Goa%20was%20won%20back%20on%20December%2019%2C%201961.%20Goa%27s%20governor%20general%20Manuel%20Ant%F3nio%20Vassalo%20e%20Silva%20signed%20the%20surrender%20certificate%2C%20thus%20bringing%20Portuguese%20rule%20to%20an%20end.
