An Air India Express Flight No IX 1344 carrying 191 passengers and crew,  from Dubai to Calicut, skidded off the runway and broke into two. There were 174 adults, 10 children, five cabin crew and two pilots on board.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that he has instructed police and fire force to take urgent action in the wake of the plane.

“Have also directed the officials to make necessary arrangements for rescue and medical support,” Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan posted on Twitter.

The runway at Karipur airport follows a tabletop runway model, meaning it is located atop a plateau or a small hill with one or both ends leading to a steep precipice.
