From Indian toys to local breeds of dog, Indian PM Narendra Modi was once again ‘vocal’ about ‘local,’ addressing the nation on the 68th edition of his monthly radio programme, ‘Mann Ki Baat.’ Urging Indians to adopt local breeds of dogs as pets, the PM said that they are competent and are accustomed to the Indian conditions.

He also highlighted the role of dogs in various rescue missions and mentioned the Indian Army dogs Vida and Sophie. Both the dogs were awarded Chief of Army Staff ‘Commendation Cards’ on Independence Day.

“Vida was instrumental in the detection of five mines and one grenade buried underground and Sophie, an explosive detection dog sniffed out the presence of initiator/accelerant which could have been hastily used to fabricate an IED, thereby saving precious lives,” Indian Army had said.

Speaking further, PM Modi said that NDRF and the army have inducted Indian breeds of dogs in their units. The PM also had a piece of advice, regarding which Indian breeds are the best. According to him, Mudhol Hound, Himachali Hound, Rajapalayam, Kanni, Chippiparai and Combai are some of the best Indian breeds.

“The cost of their upkeep is also quite less,” PM added making a convincing case for Indian breeds.
