Lalbagh Botanical Garden, generally called Lalbagh, is an old botanical garden in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru. The garden is popular for its historically rich backstory and beautiful architecture.
The Lalbagh garden was first planned and laid out during the dalavaiship of Hyder Ali and later adorned with unique plant species by his son Tippu. The key building of this garden was first commissioned in 1760. After Tippu’s death, the garden was managed under numerous British Superintendents before Indian Independence.
Lalbagh is spread over 240 acres (0.97 km2) space and home over 1,000 species of plants with several trees that are more than a century old. The garden also hosts two flower shows every day.
The also has some rare species of plants brought from Persia, Afghanistan and France. Most of the centuries-old trees are labelled for easy identification. The garden has another point of attraction- The Lalbagh Rock, which is one of the most ancient rock formations on earth, dating back to 3,000 million years.
