Answer: Peru

The 15th-century citadel stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest in Peru’s Machupicchu District. The UNESCO World Heritage Site covers 32,592 hectares of mountain slopes, peaks and valleys. Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 before the UNESCO recognition in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide internet poll. Built around 1450 as an estate for for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, Machu Picchu was abandoned with the Spanish conquest of Inca Empire in the sixteenth century. It was not until 1911 that the archaeological complex was made known to the outside world. UNESCO says the “religious, ceremonial, astronomical and agricultural centre” of Machu Picchu comprises 200 structures including Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Machu Picchu derives its name from the Quechua language’s machu and pikchu words.
