India reported 39,796 fresh cases of COVID-19 and 723 deaths in the last 24 hours, data released by the Union Health Ministry on Monday stated. With this, India’s COVID tally has risen to 30,585,229 while the death toll is at 402,728.

As of Monday, the active caseload throughout the country has declined to 482,071 — with patients discharged in the previous 24 hours — bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 29,700,430.

A total of 419,777,457 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till July 4, according to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), out of which 1,522,504 samples were tested on Sunday.

352,892,046 individuals have been administered with at least one dose of COVID vaccine as of Saturday. On January 16, India’s immunisation campaign had begun.

Last week, Mumbai-based pharmaceutical firm Cipla was granted permission to import and sell the Moderna vaccine in India. The Moderna vaccine might become India’s fourth vaccine to be approved for emergency use by the Drugs Controller General (DCGI).

Meanwhile, following an unprecedented increase in COVID cases this summer, the country is seeing a gradual decrease in instances. India had approximately 400,000 daily infections during the second wave.

On August 7, India’s COVID tally reached 20 lakh; on September 16, it surpassed 50 lakh; and on December 19, it surpassed one crore. On May 4, the country passed the 2 crore case mark, and on June 23, it passed the 3 crore mark.

However, the Ministry of Health has said that comorbidities were responsible for more than 70% of the fatalities.

“Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website.
