India kicked off their series against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

As the Rohit Sharma-led outfit walked out on to the field, they were seen wearing black armbands in memory of legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar, who died at the age of 92 on Sunday at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, weeks after being hospitalised with COVID-19.

Earlier in the day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice-President Rajeev Shukla had said that the Indian team would wear black arm bands to commemorate the ‘Nightingale of India’ after reports emerged about her death.

Subsequently, the BCCI tweeted a photo of the Indian cricket team wearing black armbands. “The queen of melody, Lata didi loved cricket, always supported the game and backed Team India,” wrote the apex organisation for cricket in India.

Tributes to Lata Mangeshkar also poured in from the cricket community in India, and several Indian players took to Twitter to pay tribute to the beloved singer who has thousands of hit songs to her name.

Former India skipper Virat Kohli put out a tweet on Mangeshkar’s contributions to music. “Thank you for all the music and the memories. My deepest condolences to the family & the loved ones,” wrote the 33-year-old.

Several other players from the Indian cricket team also joined in to pay tribute to the 92-year-old, whose music touched millions across the world.

Several former Indian cricketers and pundits also took to social media to express their condolences at the passing of the singer.

Earlier in the day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Mangeshkar, and a two-day period of mourning has been declared in India to commemorate one of the finest vocalists to have ever emerged from the country.
