Chennai Super Kings defeated the Punjab Kings with six wickets and 26 deliveries to spare for their first win of the season at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Friday. Moeen Ali missed out on his fourth Indian Premier League fifty, after being dismissed by Murugan Ashwin. Ali and Faf du Plessis added 66 runs for the second wicket.

Earlier, an excellent spell from Deepak Chahar helped CSK restrict Punjab to a lowly 106/8 as their top-order faltered early in the innings. Chahar registered his best IPL figures, taking four wickets for 13 runs. Shahrukh Khan was the lone-warrior in the Punjab batting, scoring 47 runs to help his side get to three figures.

Here are the highlights of the match:

. CSK complete a comfortable win, by wickets and with 26 deliveries to spare, to get off the mark in IPL 2021. The damage was done in the first powerplay of the match, where Punjab lost four wickets for just 19 runs.

. CSK are just stuttering a bit towards the end, with Shami dismissing Raina and Rayudu in the same over. Gets them both with bouncers, with Raina gloving it to Rahul while Rayudu mishits for Pooran to catch at cover-point. (CSK score: 99/4 from 14.3 overs)

. Moeen Ali missed out on his fourth Indian Premier League fifty, after being dismissed by Murugan Ashwin. (CSK score: 90/2 from 12.3 overs)

. Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali bring up their 50-run stand with CSK cruising to victory. The milestones comes up after Ali latched on to an overpitched delivery for a boundary through extra cover. (CSK score: 74/1 from 11 overs)

. Arshdeep Singh has drawn first blood for Punjab, dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad, who mistimes a pull shot to send it straight down the throat of Deepak Hooda. (CSK score: 24/1 from 5 overs)

. Shahrukh Khan misses out on a well-deserved fifty, miscuing a bouncer from Sam Curran for Jadeja to take a simple catch at deep midwicket. (PBKS score 101/8 from 19.1 overs)

. Dwayne Bravo dismisses Murugan Ashwin. (PBKS score: 87/7 from 16.5 overs).

. Moeen Ali has clean bowled Jhye Richardson as Punjab lose their sixth. The Aussie misses a short one, which goes straight through to crash into the stumps. (PBKS score: 57/6 from 12.1 overs)

. Chahar is on fire! Gets his fourth wicket on the night and his best-ever figures in IPL. Bowls a fuller one to Deepak Hooda, which he chips stright to du Plessis at mid-off. (PBKS score: 26/5 from 6.2 overs)

. Deepak Chahar gets two in an over. Removes Gayle first with a slower one, which is well-caught by Jadeja at backward point. He then gets Pooran with the short ball, which the Trinidadian pulls straight to Shardul Thakur at fine leg. (PBKS score: 19/4 from 4.4 overs)

. It’s never wise to take on Jadeja for a risky run and KL Rahul has learnt his lesson the hard way. Gayle flicks it towards backward point and there was hesitation before the pair take on the single, but Jadeja is lightning quick and dead accurate with his throw, catching Rahul short of the crease. (PBKS score: 15/2 from 2.5 overs)

. Mayank clean bowled by Chahar! A beautiful outswinging delivery, beats the outsie edge of Mayank’s bat and crashes into top of off. (PBKS score: 1/1 from 0.4 overs)

CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl first. Neither teams have made any changes to the playing elevens since their last fixtures.

Punjab are looking to build on their win against the Rajasthan Royals on Monday, while Chennai will be hoping to get a first IPL 2021 win under their belt, after being beaten by the Delhi Capitals last Saturday.

KL Rahul scored 91, with Deepak Hooda scoring a quickfire 64, as Punjab set a daunting 222-run target for Rajasthan, which they successfully defended with 4 runs to spare after a last-ball thriller.

Meanwhile, Raina marked his return to the tournament with a half-century against the Delhi Capitals, with handy contributions coming from Moeen Ali and Sam Curran.

MS Dhoni recorded his fourth IPL duck on the night as CSK finished with a below-par total, which openers Delhi chased down with seven wickets to spare.
