An all-round Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were no match for SunRisers Hyderabad as the Bengaluru side defeated SRH by 67 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. After Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik blasted SRH bowlers, Wanindu Hasaranga spun out SRH as the Hyderabad side was bowled out for 125 in reply to RCB’s 192 for 2. This was RCB’s seventh win in 12 matches and they are currently fourth on the points table.

Faf du Plessis’ captain’s knock

RCB, after deciding to bat first, got off to a poor start as they lost Virat Kohli for a first-ball duck off Jagadeesha Suchith. However, captain Faf du Plessis (73* off 50 balls) and Rajat Patidar (48 off 38 balls) shared 105 runs partnership for the second wicket.

Both batters batted with authority. While du Plessis hit two sixes and eight boundaries, Patidar sent the delivery past the fence four times and hit a six.

After Suchith broke the partnership bamboozling Patidar in the 13th over, du Plessis shared a 54 runs partnership with Glenn Maxwell, who scored 30 off 24 balls. Maxwell dispatched three boundaries and hit two sixes before falling to Kartik Tyagi in the second ball of the 19th over as RCB were three down for 159 runs.

Karthik’s late blitz

At this stage, with eight balls remaining in the match, Dinesh Karthik took Fazalhaq Farooqi to the cleaners. After collecting eight runs from the last two balls off Tyagi’s over, Karthik smashed Fazalhaq Farooqi for three consecutive sixes and a boundary of the last four balls to help RCB post a massive 192 for 3 in 20 overs.

Wanindu Hasaranga bamboozles SRH

In reply, SRH got off to a horrible start as they lost captain Kane Williamson in the very first ball as Shahbaz Ahmed found him short of the crease. Five balls later, Maxwell castled Abhishek Sharma for nought.

SRH never really recovered from this double whammy with Wanindu Hasaranga taking his maiden fifer in IPL and Josh Hazlewood scalping a brace to bowl out SRH for 125 in 19.2 overs. Eight SRH batters failed to reach the double-figure as four batters failed to open the scoresheet.

Hasaranga’s five victims were Markram, Pooran, Suchith, Shashank Singh and Umran Malik.
