Social media giants Facebook, Instagram and Twitter may be banned in India on May 26 if they fail to comply with the new rules and policies that the Government of India had announced in February. The new rules requires the large social media platforms to follow additional due diligence, including the appointment of a chief compliance officer, nodal contact person and resident grievance officer.

The appointment of a grievance officer would help with the public interface for complaints and need for an acknowledgement system for requests.

However, if the social media giants fail to comply with the rules, they could lose their intermediary status that provides them exemptions from liabilities any third-party information and data hosted by them.
