England have made the semifinals of the last two major international tournaments, World Cup 2018 and Nations League 2018-19, they were part of. And the last time they were in a semifinal of a major tournament before 2018 was in 1996. The Three Lions have struggled to live up to the expectations time and again. But their performances in the last three years show the progress under Gareth Southgate.

Manager Gareth Southgate has selected a consistent team over the last three years with Harry Kane, Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson, Marcus Rashford, and Raheem Sterling being some of the first names in the squad list. Players are more used to playing with each other since Southgate took over, and this has improved the team chemistry, which is reflected in his record of having a 63% win rate over 54 games.

Maguire and John Stones, over the years, have been the first choice teamed centre-back pairing for England. And they are favourites to team up again, given that Maguire is back from injury in time. The fullback options are plenty, but the injury of Trent Alexander Arnold has brought in Ben White. The most likely fullback pairing would be Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker, with Trippier and Reece James also in contention.

Declan Rice, Henderson, Mason Mount and the emergence of Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham give a lot to choose from for the midfield. And lastly, the Three Lions have a young and pacy attacking lineup, comprising Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

With the depth and quality on paper, that England has, they would go into Euro 2020 as one of the teams to beat.
