Mrcchakatika, which means The Little Clay Cart in English, is a ten-act Sanskrit play, which is considered to have been written by Shudraka, a playwright who lived in 5th century CE. In the prologue of the play, Shudraka is identified as a ‘Kshatriya king’ who is also a devotee of Shiva. According to the prologue, Shudraka lived for over 110 years.

Set in the city of Ujjayini during the of King Palaka, of the Pradyota dynasty, Mrcchakatika tells a story of a noble but poor young Brahmin boy, Charudatta, who falls in love with a wealthy courtesan, or nagarvadhu, Vasantasena. With the eyes of the evil courtier Samsthanaka on Vasantasena, the couple must fight off several dangers to end up happily ever after.

The unique thing about Shudraka’s plays is that unlike his contemporaries, he did not borrow from epics or mythology. The characters in his play are populated with common people, like courtesans, courtiers, or gamblers. The protagonist too, is not noble or does not have blue blood, he is instead an ordinary man.
