KBC 13 Offline Quiz (September 12, 2021): Which is the tallest mountain in the Indian territory?

A. Kanchenjunga

B. K2

C. Mount Everest

D. Nanga Parbat

Answer: Kanchenjunga

Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 8,586m (28,169 ft). It is located in the section of the Himalayas called the Kangchenjunga Himal delimited in the west by the Tamur River, in the north by the Lhonak Chu and Jongsang La and in the east by the Teetsa River. It lies between India and Nepal, with three of the five peaks – called the Main, Central and South – directly on the border and the peaks West and Kangbachen in Nepal’s Taplejung District.

It was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world until 1852 but calculations based on readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India concluded that Mount Everest, known until then as Peak XV, was the highest.

It was first climbed on May 25, 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band, who were part of the 1955 British Kanchenjunga expedition.
