Grahavarman was a king of Kannauj round the early seventh-century CE. He was the son of Avantivarman, the founder of the Maukhari dynasty. Grahavarman married Rajyashri, the daughter of Thanesar’s ruler, Prabhakar Vardhana. The wedding appears to have been an alliance between the two houses against the Malavas ruler.  

When Shashanka, the ruler of the Gauda kingdom in Bengal, joined involved, the tripartite fight for control within the region became a four-sided battle. The Maukharis and Bengal’s kings had been feuding for nearly fifty years, and Shashanka was anxious that the wedding alliance would enhance the Maukhari position. He forged an alliance with the Malavas and attacked the Maukhari capital of Kannauj, which he was able to overcome. He assassinated Grahavarman and kidnapped Rajyashri. Harshavardhana was an Indian monarch who ruled North India from 606 to 647 CE. 

 He belonged to the Vardhana dynasty and was the younger brother of Rajyavardhana, the king of Thanesar in modern-day Haryana who defeated the Alchon Huna invaders. 

Harshavardhan was a big supporter of education and was the author of three Sanskrit plays: Nagananda, Ratnavali, and Priyadarshika. He constructed numerous rest homes and hospitals. When Harsha attempted to expand his Empire into the southern peninsula of India, he was defeated by the south Indian Emperor Pulakeshin II of the Chalukya dynasty in the Battle of Narmada.
