KBC 2021: With which environmental movement would you associate Sundarlal Bahuguna?

Answer: B. Chipko Movement

The Chipko movement or ‘chipko andolan’ began in 1973 in Uttarakhand, India. It was started as a forest conservation movement.

It went on to become a rallying point for many future environmental movements. While the movement was there, it was Sunderlal Bahuguna, a Gandhian activist, who gave direction to the movement. The movement was non-violent and inspired many similar eco-groups to help slow down the rapid deforestation.

The movement’s slogan is “Ecology is the permanent economy”. This movement amped up the existing civil society in India. The Chipko Andolan or the Chipko movement practiced methods of Satyagraha where both male and female activists played vital roles. The movement saw activists like Gaura Devi, Suraksha Devi, Sudesha Devi, Bachni Devi and Chandi Prasad Bhatt, Virushka Devi and others take part.
