Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal at Tokyo Olympics. She becomes the first Indian to win a medal at the 2021 Olympic Games. Chanu was born and raised in the northeastern state of Manipur.

She secured the silver medal after lifting a total of 202 kg in the women’s 49kg category. She is the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.

Chanu’s family and friends are elated with her win as they celebrate her winning moment from their house in Manipur.

Chanu was quoted saying to ANI, “I’m very happy that I’ve won the medal. The entire country was watching me & they had their expectations, I was a little nervous but I was determined to give my best…I worked really hard for this. I tried my best to win a gold medal, I wasn’t able to win gold, but I really tried. When I did 2nd lift, I understood I’ll bring a medal along with me.”

Her coach Vijay Sharma said, “This silver medal is the result of her dedication & discipline. She experienced some physical problem before the match, otherwise, she would’ve done much better. After winning, she said, “Sir, hum dono ka medal ka sapna poora ho gaya” (Translation: Sir, Our dream of winning a medal has come true).”

“We are very happy today. This is a result of her hard work. India and Manipur are proud of her,” says her relative in Imphal to ANI.

Many took to Twitter to congratulate Chanu on her achievement.
