In a dog-eat-dog
world, monkeys seem to have joined the equation. In a shocking turn of events,
two monkeys in Beed, a district in Maharashtra, were captured by forest
authorities after they killed nearly 250 dogs in revenge for a baby monkey’s
death. Taken into captivity on Sunday by the Nagpur Forest Department, the two
monkeys were taken to another forest and released.

A villager shared the events that had taken place. According to him, the
revenge attacks were happening for the past three months. The monkeys would
take puppies to higher ground and leave them there. These puppies either died
from starvation or fell off the rooftops and died.

Monkeys are known to be quite a clever species. According to
research published in 2017, monkeys display aggression and hostility if done
wrong by any of their fellows.

While it’s not clear if the killings were spurred by revenge, the
instance is shocking for the local villagers who have lost over 200 puppies.

Amol Munde, range forest officer in the area, told News18 that while he
was aware of three to four cases of abduction and killing of puppies by
monkeys, he wasn’t aware of a baby monkey being killed by dogs. He added that
unlike others, he does not believe that the deaths were in revenge. He feels the
monkeys would have been taking care of the puppies by keeping them on trees or
rooftops.

Local villagers have begun
to worry about their children. According to a villager, some people have been
injured while trying to run away from the pair of monkeys. However, no cases of
monkey bites have been reported yet in the village.

The case has shocked many,
and images of the supposedly vengeful monkey duo being put into cages by forest
authorities and personnel have been spiraling on the internet.
