The franchise has three hit films, two animated TV series and a bunch of other media tie-ins under its belt so far.

The newest series, which was announced for a December debut by DreamWorks, is called Dragons: The Nine Realms, which will take place 1,300 years after the timeline the movies were set in.

The new series will be different from its predecessors as all previous installments were set in a fantasy Viking-era.

“Set 1,300 years after the events of How to Train Your Dragon, dragons are now just a legend to the modern world. When a geological anomaly opens up an immense, miles-deep fissure in the Earth’s surface, scientists from all over the world gather at a new research facility to study the mysterious phenomenon. Soon a group of misfit kids, brought to the site by their parents, uncover the truth about dragons and where they’ve been hiding—a secret they must keep to themselves to protect what they’ve discovered,” read the press release by DreamWorks.

The new series being set in a fresh timeline also means that the films’ stars Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, and Snotlout are all going to be long-dead when the show takes place.
