The demolition of the Noida twin towers built by Supertech Realtor was carried out at 2:30 PM on August 28, 2022, as per orders from the Supreme Court of India. While authorities had earlier stated that no neighbouring areas had suffered any kind of damage from the demolition, reports have surfaced that a nearby society, ATS, has suffered some damage.

ANI spoke to Ritu Maheshwari, the CEO of Noida Authority, who said that 10 metres of the neighbouring society’s boundary wall was damaged due to the blast. Moreover, some glass windows were also shattered by the impact of the blast. Commander-in-charge of the operation, DCP S Rajesh, told NDTV that another nearby society, Supertech Emerald, “did not suffer any damage”. Notably, it was the case the Supertech Emerald residents filed against the construction of these towers that led to the latter’s eventual demolition.

The demolition was carried out using 3,700 kg of explosives and reportedly generated waste weighing 85,000 tonnes. The entire structure was brought down in nine seconds flat. After the demolition, authorities used water sprinklers in order to bring down the dust particles generated. An area has been identified in Noida where 21,000 tonnes of the debris will be disposed of. Moreover, a huge chunk of the debris will also be placed in the basements of the twin towers.

PTI spoke to RK Arora, the chairman of Supertech Realtor, who said that the company has sustained damage of Rs. 500 crores from the demolition: “Our overall loss is around Rs. 500 crore, taking into account the amount we have spent on land and construction cost, the charges paid to authorities for various approvals, interest paid to banks over the years and the 12 per cent interest paid back to buyers of these two towers, among other costs”.

 The demolition of the two towers, which were taller than the Qutub Minar, was the biggest of its kind in India’s history.
