Chennai’s Manali area and northern
Bengaluru have been flooded after torrential rain in southern states due to low
pressure over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

Manali, Chennai’s industrial pocket, is the
most affected as water entered houses and many other parts of northern Chennai
were heavily inundated due to excess release of water from the high-rising
Kosasthalaiyar river.

Water overflowing from the neighbouring
Andhra Pradesh city of Chittoor has contributed heavily to the overnight flood.

A few days ago water from the Poondi
reservoir in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district was released beyond 3000 cubic
feet per second. However, discharge from the Poondi reservoir has now been
reduced, authorities said today.

Disaster response teams have deployed boats
to rescue people from the inundated area.

Northern Bengaluru waterlogged

Meanwhile, Karnataka capital Bengaluru saw
heavy flooding overnight as the Allalasandra lake overflowed, leaving the
surrounding area inundated. Several roads in northern Bengaluru were heavily
waterlogged following last night’s heavy downpour.

Yelahanka, Nagavara, Kogilu Cross and
Vidyaranyapura are among the most affected areas due to last night’s rain.
Yelahanka alone received 153 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, contributing to
the area’s heavy flooding. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) paid a
visit to the Yelahanka area to clear a waterlogged apartment.

25 people killed in AP

The India Meteorological Department had
predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls over parts of
South India on November 16, with light to moderate rainfall over the week.

On Friday, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Mi-17
helicopter evacuated 10 people stranded in the fast-flowing waters of the
Chitravati river in the Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh.

Rains lashed out the coastal Andhra Pradesh
that triggered flash floods, prompting the rescue operation by the Indian Air
Force, SDRF and Fire Services personnel.

On receiving a distress call from the state
government, the helicopter took off from Air Force Station, Yelahanka in
Bengaluru at a short notice and reached the rescue site combating inclement
weather conditions, reported ANI. After safely evacuating all the ten stranded
people from the overflowing river, the helicopter was recovered at Puttaparthi,
Andhra Pradesh.

Due to rain 25 people were killed in Andhra
Pradesh and 17 others are still missing.
