Prime Minister Narendra Modi will shortly address a mega rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Sunday. Ahead of the rally, popular Bengali actor Mithun Chakraborty joined the BJP. The announcement comes just weeks ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections. 

Prior to the rally, security cover in the city has been increased by the Kolkata police, as well as security agencies from the Centre, according to Times Now.

Modi’s rally is expected to culminate the BJP’s state-wide Parivartan Yatra, covering the state’s 294 assembly constituencies, with more than seven lakh supporters to attend it. 

Four-layered barricades have been set up in front of the podium where Modi is scheduled to give his address. While there would be a small platforms along with the main dais for local BJP leaders, another platform will be set for journalists. 

The whole Brigade ground has been barricaded to control the crowd along with the installation of 1,500 CCTV cameras. 

Entry of any goods vehicle into the city will be restricted till 8 pm while movements of trams will also be suspended near the Brigade Parade Ground area. 

Assembly Elections will be taking place in eight phases in West Bengal, beginning from March 27 up until April 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 2.
