World Meteorological Day: The World Meteorological Organisation, which organises the World Meteorological Day, focuses on weather, climate, water, and the environment. “By 2030, to see a world where all nations, particularly the most vulnerable, are more resilient to the socioeconomic consequences of extreme weather, climate, water, and other environmental events; and underpin their sustainable development through the best possible services, whether overland, at sea, or in the air,” says the World Meteorological Organization.

Why is March 23 observed as World Meteorological Day?

The World Meteorological Organization was founded on this day in 1948. (WMO). The WMO is in charge of researching and focusing on our planet’s atmosphere, as well as raising awareness about it. This day is intended to draw attention to the myriad problems that our planet’s atmosphere and ecosystem are facing. The more significant component is how we can assist our planet and its environment by raising awareness of the issues that surround us.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was founded on March 23, 1950. The organisation has now been in existence for 72 years. Since then, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has made significant progress in its research and efforts to improve knowledge about the planet and its atmosphere.

The World Meteorological Organization is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a United Nations (UN) specialised organisation that now has 193 member countries, including India.

So what does the WMO do?

Simply said, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is dedicated to international coordination and collaboration among its member states to study and research the Earth’s atmosphere. It not only observes land masses and oceans, but also the weather and climate, as well as the distribution of water resources in the world. They “address many many elements and topics from observations, information exchange, and research to weather forecasts and early warnings, from capacity development and greenhouse gas monitoring to application services and much, much more,” according to the World Meteorological Organization.

A lesser-known fact

Did you know that the World Meteorological Organization was involved in the Nobel Peace Prize awarding in 2007? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore, former Vice-President of the United States, shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. They were honoured for “their efforts to increase and share information about man-made climate change, as well as to set the groundwork for the countermeasures that are required to address such change.” The IPCC laid the foundation for today’s climate change policy. It was also co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization. The IPCC Secretariat is based at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Who represents India at the WMO?
