Many Muslims in South Asia
celebrate the festival of Shab-e-Barat with great enthusiasm. According to
Sunni Islam traditions, Allah frees his sinful servants, who were destined a
place in hell, on the night of Shab-e-Barat which translates to ‘the night of
freedom’.

After the sunset on Sunday (March 28, 2021), the 15th of the Shabaan will begin. Shab-e-Barat will
be observed till the sunset on Monday (March 29, 2021).

Many Muslims believe that a
person’s life in the coming year, his sustenance, and whether he will have the
opportunity to perform Hajj shall be decided on this night.

According to the tradition, the Muslims
community members visits Mosques and graveyards on the day and this is the day
where people pray to Allah to forgive one’s dead ancestors. It is believed that
Allah forgives all the sins on the night and also decided people’s fortune for
the year ahead. Shab-e-Barat is observed 15 days prior to the holy month
of Ramadan or Ramzan.
