As India is
celebrating its 72nd Republic Day on Tuesday, Google has found an
interesting way to mark this day with a doodle illustration by an artist named Onkar Fondekar.
The
Mumbai-based guest artist made the doodle that honours the day 71 years ago when
the Indian Constitution came into effect and India officially transitioned into
a sovereign republic. His illustration shows a variety of colourful cultures
that reflects the diversity in India.
The doodle
includes people from different regions, donning their regional attires. From
musician to film director, teacher to cricketer, farmer to student, reflects
the richness of our country’s heritage. However, the traditionality doesn’t
take away the progress that India is continuously achieving. For example, the
Rajasthan man, in his traditional outfit is clicking a selfie.

It also showcased
the distinctive architectural styles of the country.
When asked about his artwork, Fondekar
said, “I felt fortunate and happy that I got the opportunity to portray
India on a global platform like Google Doodle. At the same time, I knew there
were so many things, so much diversity and such a wide canvas I could
illustrate.”
“I
drew inspiration from the people of India – the culture, traditions, history,
and architecture,” he added, saying that “unity” is what he
hopes people take away from the doodle.
This year, Republic Day
celebration will be a small event with few performers and spectators in the
wake of COVID-19 pandemic.
