The onset of the New Year calls for a celebration – where you
welcome a new time full of positivity, wondering deep inside what new doom will
the next year bring; celebrate with some wine, praying for a hangover so you
can swim in your dreams a little longer; a dessert is a must because nothing
uplifts your mood better than chocolate; and making ‘new year’ resolutions only to
break them!

If you are far away from home, and feeling nauseated with
the peer pressure of screaming ‘Happy New Year’ at the top of your lungs when
the clock strikes 12, we have got your back.

Here is a list of five movies that will leave you smiling
with a trickle of tear, to make your New Year truly special:

1.       Home Alone

When eight-year-old Kevin McCallister
throws a tantrum the night before a family trip to Paris, his wish of not
having a family comes true as he is accidentally left home alone by his family.
What initially started as a joy ride — sneaking into his elder brother’s
secret game stash, jumping on his parents’ bed and watching his uncle’s R-rated
films — soon turned upside down. He realised his house was on the target list
of being robbed by two con-men and he must do everything to protect his humble
abode. This 90s classic never fails to cheer you up, leaving your heart filled
with some festive joy.

2.       Sleepless in Seattle

“I just want somebody I can have a decent
conversation with over dinner.” When Tom Hanks said these words, he left
his viewers sleepless for days. After widow Sam Baldwin (Hanks) moved to
Seattle with his son, Jonah, his son called in to a talk-radio program to find
a new wife for his father. Sam gets in touch with already betrothed Annie Reed
on the show. As destiny would have it, Reed falls for Baldwin. And the rest, as
they say, is history.

3.       Sex and the City: The Movie

The movie revolves around the lives of Carrie,
Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha – four girls that have set standards for
friendship and love. Carrie is all set to marry her love, Mr. Big when he bails
out on his own wedding, leaving her heartbroken. Going to her honeymoon with
her friends, the four rediscover their journeys, revealing long-hidden secrets.
The New Year’s montage where Carrie is running through the crowded streets of
New York in heels with the snow falling softly, to be there for her friend
Miranda is what we all secretly desire.

4.       The
Holiday

To forget the bad breakups in their lives
and in search for some Christmas cheer, Amanda from America, played by Cameron
Diaz, and Iris from Britain, played by Kate Winslet, swap homes and their lives
in a temporary setup. They both find happiness and love, but must decide their
paths ahead as their time to return home approaches. This film will leave you
smiling, laughing, and crying all at once.

5.
Definitely,
Maybe

Will Hayes, played by Ryan Reynolds shares
a special bond with his daughter, played by Abigail Breslin. He is in the
middle of divorce proceedings when his daughter asks him about how he met his
mother. Hayes reminisces his love life, which includes three women, one of
which is his daughter’s mother. He changes their names and asks his daughter to
recognise her mother from the stories. This movie will leave you in awe of the
beautiful father-daughter relationship portrayed on-screen.
