Answer: 1943.
Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) was established during the Quit India Movement on May 25, 1943, at the national conference of theater artists at the Marwari school in Mumbai( then Bombay). This was a time when India’s independence struggle was at its peak and European and other global powers were engaged in the deadly conflict of World War II. The Bengal famine of 1943 and the Nazi invasion of Soviet Russia also prompted intellectuals in India to take an initiative for keeping the masses aware about these issues of national and global importance.
Eminent Bollywood personalities of the time such as Prithviraj Kapoor, Balraj Sahni, and Utpal Dutt were among people from different walks of life who joined the IPTA. Bijoy Bhattachary’s Bengali play Nabanna (New Harvest) highlighted the plight of the Bengal famine, while Nava Jiboner Gaan by Jyotirindra Moitra and the film Dharti Ke Laal also captured the mood of the nation
IPTA has more than 500 units in states and union territories across India, with more than 12,000 members.
