KBC 2021: Which nerve transmits visual information from the retina to the brain?

A. Optic Nerve

B. Oculomotor Nerve

C. Sciatic Nerve

D. Radial Nerve

Answer: Optic Nerve

Optic Nerve is essentially a cable-like structure of nerve fibres. It primarily transmits visual information from the retina to the brain. The nerve comprises retinal ganglion cell axons. The optic nerve receives light signals from as close to 125 million photoreceptor cells, which are known as rods and cones, via two intermediate neuron types. These neuron typesare bipolar and amacrine cells. The optic nerve then transmits vision signals to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) in the brain, where visual information is interpreted by the visual cortex of the brain which converts the image impulses into objects that we see.
