Justin Patrick Herbert is a quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). The 23-year-old American footballer became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to complete 500 passes before his 20th start during the Chargers’ 28-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on October 4, 2021. Herbert achieved the milestone on a 4-yard connection to Jared Cook with 1:32 left in the second quarter. He was selected by the Chargers sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. On July 25, 2020, Herbert signed his four-year rookie contract, worth a fully guaranteed $26.6 million.
His Los Angeles Chargers jersey was the 12th best selling jersey to start the 2020 NFL season that also saw him being named the backup quarterback behind starter Tyrod Taylor who suffered a punctured lung in pre-game.
Born on March 10, 1998 in Eugene, Oregon, Herbert suffered a broken leg in the third game of his junior season for the Sheldon High School. As a senior, he passed for 3,130 yards and 37 touchdowns, and rushed for 543 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He played college football for the Oregon Ducks, where he won the 2019 Pac-12 Championship and was named MVP of the 2020 Rose Bowl.
Herbert’s grandfather, Rich Schwab, played receiver at Oregon in the 1960s. Herbert graduated with a bachelor’s degree in general science. He was awarded the 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy for excellence in academics, athletics, and leadership. Herbert’s younger brother, Patrick, also attends Oregon as a tight end for the Ducks and his older brother, Mitchell, played wide receiver at Montana State.

Herbert became the Chargers starting quarterback in the second game of his rookie year and set several rookie statistical records, including the most touchdown passes and the most 300-yard games during the rest of the season. He was also named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as a result.

He is the third player in NFL history to pass for at least 300 yards and rush for a touchdown in his first career game. He became the first rookie in NFL history to throw for four touchdown passes on Monday Night Football. He also became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history with multiple touchdowns in seven consecutive games. He also holds the NFL record for most passing touchdowns by a rookie.
