Uttar Pradesh Minister Swami Prasad Maurya caused a national storm after his recent resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The 68-year-old OBC leader resigned after opening up about the negligence of Dalits, OBCs and farmers by the Yogi Adityanath-led government.  He was then welcomed by Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav.

Swami Prasad Maurya, a five-time MLA, contests from the Padrauna constituency of Uttar Pradesh. Known for leading the grassroot Maurya and Kushwaha communities, the leader has also been a former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) minister.

The veteran politician had resigned from the party back in 2016, after alleging that the party runs on a “money for ticket” syndicate, although the allegation was slammed by former Chief Minister Mayawati.

Later on, he decided to establish his own organisation, known as the Loktantrik Bahujan Manch and was appointed as a cabinet minister in 2017 by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

His daughter Sanghamitra Maurya is a BJP Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Budaun.

Swami Prasad Maurya began his political career with Prayagraj’s Yuva Lok Dal. Between 1991 and 1995, he became the state general secretary of the Janata Dal. He was sworn in as the state general secretary of the BSP in 1996. After having a falling out with former Chief Minister Mayawati due to alleged ticket auctions, the leader went on to join forces with the BJP.
