The World Hand Hygiene Day is observed on May 5, every year. The day is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of maintaining good hand hygiene. The day is important than ever as the world is grappling with the novel coronavirus pandemic since last year and good hand hygiene is crucial to keep the disease at bay.

The theme for the day this year’s World Hand Hygiene Day is ‘Achieving hand hygiene at the point of care’. The slogan for the day is ‘Seconds save lives – clean your hands!’

The ‘Clean Your Hands’ campaign was launched in 2009 and since then, May 5 is observed as the World Hand Hygiene Day. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the ‘Clean Your Hands’ campaign “aims to progress the goal of maintaining a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in health care.”

It also aims to “‘bring people together’ in support of hand hygiene improvement globally.”
