When the earthquake hit Peru in November 2021, it damaged homes and minor injuries were reported. The tremors occurred in the sparsely populated Amazon rainforest region.
Though the earthquake was extremely strong, it was pretty deep underground, thus largely limiting the damage that might have otherwise unfolded. It took place in the Nazca plate at the Peru-Chile trench. As per the US Geological Survey, large earthquakes occurring at depths is common for the area.
Apart from Peru, neighbouring Ecuador also reported that tremors were felt in 19 out of 24 provinces. Over the last century, there were five other earthquakes at intermediate depths, all of which were of magnitude 7 or higher.
