McDonald’s capitalised on the Chicago Bulls’ popularity in 1992 by producing the special McJordan burger. This limited-edition burger was served on a sesame seed bun. Pickles, raw onion pieces, bacon, and barbecue sauce were included in the McJordan. However, the hamburger behemoth did not employ conventional bacon pieces. In fact, the firm employed old-fashioned circular bacon.
While NBA fans liked the notion of the McJordan, only a few people got to eat the limited-edition burger. Only Chicago teams had access to the McJordan, causing jealousy among fans in other cities. This burger was so rare that in 2012, a guy from Chicago paid nearly $10,000 for a gallon of McJordan BBQ sauce on eBay.
According to ESPN, a gallon of the sauce was found in the house of Mort Bank, a former McDonald’s owner-operator in North Dakota, along with other McDonald’s memorabilia. He decided to put the unusual artefact on eBay to see what he could get for it. He placed the item up for sale for several months, but no one ever matched the $10,000 minimum price. Later on, he included a “purchase it now” option.
According to ESPN, “All of a sudden a news story broke, not sure how, but all of a sudden my daughter called and said we were getting all kinds of offers and questions about it,” Bank said. “It started spreading on the Internet. People paid attention and started making offers.” He eventually accepted a $9,995 offer.
