Former India skipper and coach Anil Kumble turns 51 on Sunday. Wishes poured in on social media for legendary Indian leg-spinner, fans describing him as a match-winner and one of the greatest bowlers of the game.

Kumble made his India Test debut on August 9, 1990 and on April 25, 1990 in ODIs. The Punjab Kings head coach played his last international game in October 2008 against Australia. In a career that spanned for almost two decades, Kumble took 619 wickets in his 132 Tests, fourth highest all-time wicket-taker after Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka (800), Shane Warne from Australia (708) and James Anderson of England (632).

While Anil Kumble achieved a lot during his time as a player and then coach, one of his finest memories were made at the then Feroz Shah Kotla stadium (now called Arun Jaitley Stadium) against Pakistan in February 1999. On the day, Kumble became only the second bowler after Jim Laker in the history of Test cricket to take 10 wickets in a single inning of a match.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had on the anniversary of the event on February 7 shared the video. Let’s take a look:

It was Kumble’s fiery spell that helped India avenge the first Test loss in Chennai. Pakistan had gotten off to a a solid start, the openers Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar stitching a 101-run stand before Kumble came in and delivered a magical spell, taking all the 10 wickets in the innings.

 In the second test, India put up 252 runs in the first innings and the visitors could manage only 172 runs. 

 In the second innings India’s Sadgopan Ramesh scored 92 runs and Sourav Ganguly left the field unbeaten at 62 runs to set a daunting 420-run target for the opponents.

It was in Pakistan’s second innings when Kumble reached the milestone. His spell saw the opponent batting lineup tumble from 101/0 to 128/6 in no time. Wasim Akram played a scratchy 38-run hand but with the kind of form Kumble was in, Pakistan were cleaned up for 207 runs. India won the game by 212 runs, their first in Tests in 19 years.
