Argentina vs Netherlands quarterfinal has turned into a riot after numerous fights broke up on the pitch. Fans are criticising referee Antonio Mateu for his decisions that have now led to a 2-2 tie at the end of 90 minutes. He shelled out 15 yellow cards in the match, even booking Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk
Watch some of the reactions right here:
When Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal was asked to comment about the choice of referee in the Netherlands vs Argentina match, he had earlier said, “Antonio Mateu Lahoz is an amazing referee. In the first 4 games we had referees from who I think these are from the 2nd division. Antonio Mateu Lahoz is from a top league and I rate him a lot.”
Argentina had many chances to score in the second half of extra time, but could not manage to find the back of the net. However, thanks to the brilliance of Emiliano Martinez, they won the penalty shootout. Martinez blocked the first two shots, giving Argentina a cushion on which they built their victory. Enzo Fernandez did miss one shot, but Argentina did manage to overcome the Dutch challenge to book their spot in the semifinal against Croatia.
The other two quarterfinals are scheduled for December 10. Portugal will face Morocco while defending champions France will be facing England. If Ronaldo wins the quarterfinals and semis, he can meet his ultimate rival in football’s ultimate match- the FIFA World Cup final. All eyes will be on CR7 after Messi booked his spot on the next stage of the tournament.
