Stokes, 31, was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, to rugby league player and coach Gerard Stokes, also known as 'Ged Stokes,' and an English mother, with English and Mori ancestry.

He moved to England when he was 12 years old, when his father was appointed head coach of Workington Town rugby league club, and grew up in the small West Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, where he attended Cockermouth School and played cricket for Cockermouth Cricket Club.
As a 15-year-old, he won the North Lancashire & Cumbria Cricket League Premier Division title with the club in 2006. His parents later relocated back to New Zealand, this time to Christchurch, Ged Stokes died of brain cancer in New Zealand on December 8, 2020.
Stokes began dating Claire Ratcliffe in 2010 and were in a live-in relationship at the time. They first met at a county match between Lancashire and Durham. Clare soon sent Ben a Facebook friend request, and their long-distance relationship began, as Clare was studying in Taunton and Stokes was playing cricket in Durham, as per Zee News. This went on for five months before they made it a social media official. Stokes proposed to Ratcliffe in 2013.
In October 2017, they married in East Brent, Somerset. They have two kids.
