Bindyarani Devi, 26,
won India its second silver of the 2022 edition of the Commonwealth Games on
Saturday. Devi lifted 116 kg to win the silver medal. The weightlifter who switched
from taekwondo to weightlifting because of her short height said, “Its my first
CWG and I feel very happy about the silver and about the Games record as well.”

Congratulations poured
in from all across the country after Bindyarani Devi’s silver medal win. Indian
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Congratulations
to Bindyarani Devi for winning a Silver medal at CWG, Birmingham. This
accomplishment is a manifestation of her tenacity and it has made every Indian
very happy. I wish her the very best for her future endeavours.”

India’s
newly-elected president, Droupadi Murmu, tweeted: “Congratulations to Bindyarani
Devi for winning Silver in Weightlifting at #CommonwealthGames. You have put up your best ever performance at the Games and
demonstrated the zeal to raise the bar. Every Indian shares the joy of your
success!”

Manipur
Chief Minister N Biren Singh wrote on Twitter: “Heartiest congratulations to
Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning the Silver medal in the weightlifting
55 Kg category at #CWG2022 Immensely proud of the profound contributions made by the
Manipuri players to our great Nation. Jai Hind!”

Manipur
minister Govindas Konthoujam wrote: “’Once again #Manipur’s Daughter brings Glory to the whole nation,’
Stellar performance from our very own weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam
on winning Silver medal in the Women’s 55 Kg weight category at #CWG2022 You are a Nation’s Champion.”

After
winning the silver medal, Bindyarani Devi said, “My next targets are national
games, World Championship, Asian Games and then the 2024 Paris Olympics. I’ll
do better in them,” reported news agency ANI.

India
had a dream run at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday. India’s weightlifters
started their medal journey with Sanket
Sargar who won silver for India. Mirabai Chanu provided India its first gold and Gururaja
Poojary won bronze along with Bindyarani’s silver.
