San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has entered the concussion protocol, as confirmed by coach Kyle Shanahan.

On Wednesday, Shanahan disclosed that he had entered the concussion protocol. He started to have symptoms on the journey back to the Bay Area on Monday night, following their 22-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Although Purdy is still expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, it is unlikely that he will clear the required paperwork in time. This season, not a single player who was put in the concussion protocol was able to play again the following week.

In Purdy’s absence, Sam Darnold will take over at quarterback. After spending two years with the Carolina Panthers, Darnold signed a contract with San Francisco this summer. In six games during the previous season, he completed passes for 1,143 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. He’s only attempted one pass in four 49ers games this fall.

In the 2023 NFL season, Brock Purdy has established himself as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback. After being chosen by the 49ers in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he quickly rose to prominence as the team’s captain, winning the last five games in the regular season and advancing to the NFC Championship Game.

Purdy combines his physical attributes—a strong arm, quick release, and mobility—with sharp football intelligence. His ability to remain calm and confident in high-pressure situations has won him praise from many.
