There is a considerable difference between the team and Jones in coming to an amicable agreement on a new contract, said a source familiar with the matter. The circumstances imply that contract talks are having difficulties, hence the player’s future with the Chiefs is uncertain until a solution is found.

Chris Jones now has one year left on his current contract, which is a four-year, $80 million agreement that he signed in 2020. With this agreement, he became the ninth-highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL at the time of signing. However, his current deal will expire after the 2023 season, which will result in ongoing contract talks to decide his future with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Prior to this, Chris Jones also missed the Chiefs’ required mini-camp in June in addition to not reporting for the start of training camp. His absence at both the mini-camp and the training camp suggests that Jones and the Chiefs’ contract talks have been drawn out and are still ongoing.

As per an ESPN report, Chris Jones is subjected to a daily punishment of $50,000 under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the players’ union for skipping out on the team’s required activities, such as training camp and mini-camp. The agreement’s rules and regulations, which are intended to ensure player commitment to team operations during the summer and preseason, are followed in imposing this consequence.
