Rohit Tokas continued India’s medal rush on Saturday as he won the bronze medal in the men’s 67kg category, after having been beaten by Stephen Zimba of Zambia in the semifinals of Commonwealth Games 2022. The 29-year-old also became the third Indian boxer to win a medal in the ongoing edition of the mega event, all of which have been bronze medals till now.

The Indian pugilist began his campaign impressively in the Commonwealth Games 2022, as he defeated Alfred Kotey of Ghana 5-0 in the round of 16 bout. The victory helped him to qualify for the quarterfinals, where he registered his second win of the tournament, defeating Xavier Mata’afa-Ikinofo of Nieu 5-0, without dropping a single point. This win resulted in him being qualified for the semifinals.

However, the tables turned for the Indian boxer in the semifinals, where he was beaten by Stephen Zimba of Zambia in a hard-fought match with a score of 2-3. The defeat meant he had won the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games, securing another laurel for the boxing contingent.

Tokas became the third Indian boxer to win a medal after Jaismine Lamboria and Mohammed Hussamuddin, both of whom won gold medals. However, other Indian boxers like Amit Panghal, Nikhat Zareen, Sagar Ahlawat and Nitu Ghanghas are still in contention to win medals at the event till now.

All four Indian boxers left at the CWG 2022 have advanced to the final of their respective categories, with Sagar Ahlawat being the latest, who defeated Ifeanyi Onyekwere of Nigeria shortly after Rohit Tokas claimed his bronze medal.

India has collected 40 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham till now, including 13 gold medals. The country has also won 11 silver and 16 bronze medals at the competition till now and are sitting at the fifth position behind Australia, England, Canada and New Zealand.
