A 2-1 win over Atalanta gave Juventus a record-extending 14th Coppa Italia on Wednesday, a title which, however, comes as little more than consolation after a poor season.

Federico Chiesa scored the winner 17 minutes from time after Ruslan Malinovskiy cancelled out Dejan Kulusevski’s opener for the Old Lady to secure club legend Andrea Pirlo‘s first trophy as manager.

Having missed out on the coveted trophy for the last two seasons, the win means Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has now lifted the league and cup titles in threee different countries, a feat that has never been acheived before.

Among Ronaldo’s 35 major career honours are three Premier Leagues and an FA Cup title with Manchester United, two La Ligas and Copa del Reys each with Real Madrid, and two Scudettos, or the Serie A titles with Juventus.

He is also now just one trophy behind his eternal rival Lionel Messi’s career haul of 36 titles.

In Ronaldo’s first season in Italy, Juve were knocked out of the Coppa Italia in the quarter final stage following a 3-0 reverse against Atalanta. The next year, the Bianconeri were beaten 4-2 by Gennarro Gattuso’s Napoli in a penalty shootout following a goalless final.

Juventus have seen their indomitable run in the Serie A come crashing this season. After winning nine Scudettos in a row, the record Italian champions have seen their crown wrested by Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan, while they are themselves languishing outside the Champions League qualification spots.

Going into the final matchday on Sunday, Juventus need to win their fixture – away to Bologna – and hope that either AC Milan or Napoli drop points in order to creep into the top four spots.

Pirlo has drawn a lot of criticism over Juve’s performances this season, wherein they have also suffered a humilitating Champions League round-of-16 exit against Porto, with his future at the club under scrutiny.
