Dallas Cowboys right tackle La’el Collins was suspended for five games on Friday after he violated the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

The decision comes a day after Collins played his first game since 2019 in the 2020-21 season opener, a 31-29 loss for Cowboys to defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Collins missed all of 2020 because of a hip issue that required surgery.

Collins won’t be able to play against Minnesota until Week 8, after Dallas’ bye week. The Cowboys will be missing their top three linemen for at least 22 games as a result of their absence.

Zack Martin, a four-time All-Pro right guard who missed 10 games last season due to a calf injury, was ruled out of the opener after testing positive for COVID-19 five days before the game.

Tyron Smith, a seven-time Pro Bowler, was only able to play in two games last season due to neck surgery.

In his first game back following a horrific ankle injury last season, Dak Prescott passed for 402 yards and three touchdowns against the Buccaneers. The Cowboys, on the other hand, struggled to establish the run against Tampa Bay and will have a similar issue without Collins.

Last season as a rookie, Terence Steele started the most games in Collins’ place, although the Cowboys also shifted Martin to right tackle for a brief period. Last year, Brandon Knight, who is on the COVID-19 reserve list alongside Martin, had the most action at left tackle.

Collins was a top draught selection out of LSU in 2015, but he was passed over when his name was linked to a woman’s death inquiry. He was cleared quickly and signed as a free agent with the Cowboys. Collins is in the third year of his Cowboys deal.
