The Dallas Cowboys and running back Tony Pollard are not expected to reach an agreement on a long-term contract before Monday’s deadline for franchised players to agree to long-term contracts.

Pollard is one of three running backs who have been given the franchise tag but have not yet signed a long-term deal. Pollard has signed his franchise tender, worth $10.09 million for the 2023 season, and participated in the Cowboys’ offseason program, as opposed to the other two running backs with the same tag, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs.

The three players have until Monday at 4 p.m. ET to commit to long-term contracts. After the Cowboys lost veteran starter Ezekiel Elliott earlier this offseason, Pollard will take over as the team’s starting running back this season. He stated in May that after having surgery to address an ankle injury he sustained in Dallas’ playoff defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in January, he is expecting to be fully prepared to practice in training camp.

Pollard underwent a “tightrope” procedure two days after the playoff defeat instead of a procedure requiring screws to be inserted into the tibia and fibula for a repair. Additionally, he had a fractured fibula, which has since healed.

After amassing a career-high 1,007 running yards on 193 touches with nine rushing touchdowns, Pollard was selected for the Pro Bowl. In addition, he caught 39 passes for 371 yards and three scores. He had never had more than 130 carries or 719 rushing yards in a season prior to the last one. Veterans of the Cowboys are expected to arrive to training camp in Oxnard, California, on July 25.
