Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez raised quite a few eyebrows after winning the Golden Glove trophy at FIFA World Cup 2022 on Sunday when he appeared to briefly hump the trophy in front of all the officials present at the awards ceremony, before walking down the ramp to pose for photos.

Martinez, 30, was one of the heroes of the evening, for the Argentina team, especially with his penalty save on Kingsley Coman to help seal the victory for his side. Although he appeared to be emotional after Argentina’s victory over France, his mood shifted to more playful after receiving the Golden Glove honor. He appeared to touch the trophy to his groin before taking the pride walk, leaving most of the spectators shocked.

While some people on social media supported his gesture, saying that he was standing up for LGBTQ rights, others were disgusted by his action and wanted FIFA to punish him.

“Argentinian soccer player Dibu Martinez makes a gesture in defense of gay rights and in defiance of Qatar human rights violations during the price ceremony,” one of the fans said, while another noted, “What was that stupid gesture by Martinez. How do you decide to be an idiot at the greatest moment of your career.”

Another noted, “Martinez won the golden glove award …that gesture though.” One more stated, “I hope @FIFAcom fines Martinez and Argentina for his gesture with the trophy.” Another quipped, “Emi Martinez performs X-rated gesture by humping trophy right in front of FIFA.”

It is not yet clear if FIFA plans to take any disciplinary action against Martinez. It also remains to be seen if the Argentinian federation will come to its goalkeeper’s defense, given that the nation just won its first World Cup in 36 years.
