Former assistant coach of NFL outfit Kansas City Chiefs, Britt Reid, pleaded guilty to felony driving that resulted in a crash last year and resulted in severe brain injury of a five-year-old girl. The family of the victim has since criticised the plea as Reid apologized to them.

The 37-year-old was originally slated to go to trial in September 2022 and was facing up to seven years of prison sentence. However, following the plea, he is facing only four years in prison, the sentencing of which is scheduled for October 28.

“Mr. Reid accepted responsibility for his actions,” Reid’s attorney said JR Hobbs said. “Mr. Reid continues to be remorseful for his conduct and hopes that his plea brings some sense of justice to all he has affected,” Hobbs added.

The victim, Ariel Young, suffered a severe brain injury in the crash on February 4 last year, which involved as many as three vehicles. According to the authorities, Ariel and another child were inside a vehicle on Interstate 435 in Kansas City, Missouri, when Reid, who was driving a Dodge Ram at a speed of 84 mph only two seconds before the collision, struck the stopped vehicle. Both children were transported to the hospital soon after.

After the crash, a test revealed that the blood alcohol concentration of Reid was .113, 40% more than the legal limit in Missouri.

Following the accident, Kansas City Chiefs signed a financial agreement with the child’s family in November last year. They agreed to take care of all medical expenses and financial stability for the girl for the rest of her life.

The NFL side also decided to not renew Reid’s contract after their defeat in Super Bowl LV in February.

According to Reid’s attorney, the former assistant coach is facing a four years prison sentence after the plea agreement, which could have been significantly more had he been convicted guilty by a jury.

However, the family of the victim has told the court that they do not favor the plea agreement, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.
