Frenkie de Jong and Lisandro Martinez were shown the yellow card after their on-pitch fight during the Argentina vs Netherlands World Cup quarterfinal clash. Both players will have to be cautious since another card might prevent them from playing in the semifinal if their respective team manages to qualify.

Argentina will already have to play without Marcos Acuna if they qualify for the semifinal. The Albiceleste were leading by a 2-0 scoreline before Wourt Weghost gave them some breathing space by scoring a goal in the 83rd minute. He added to the Dutch lead in the last minute of stoppage time to level the match.

Brazil were knocked out by Croatia in the first quarterfinal of the 2022 World Cup, and if Argentina also bite the dust, two favourites to win the tournament will be packing their bags for home.

Argentina and the Netherlands had earlier met in the semifinal of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which the Albiceleste won on penalties. However, they were defeated by Germany in the final, thanks to an extra time strike by Mario Gotze.

The referee of the match, Antonio Mateu, has been criticised for his drastic decisions after he shelled out 11 yellow cards. Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk, the captains of the two sides, were also booked.

A major bust-up occurred when Leandro Paredes struck a ball towards the Dutch dugout, invoking the wrath of the Netherlands subs.

While Netherlands lead Argentina in terms of possession (55%-45%) the South Americans have managed to have four shots on target compared to the Dutchmen’s two.
