After a grand opening ceremony on Friday, the medal competitions at Tokyo Olympics began on Saturday. China bagged three gold medals to top the medal tally, while India won a silver medal to secure the seventh position. One of the most notable moment of the day was cyclist Richard Carapaz winning the second Olympic gold medal in Ecuador’s history, with a victory in the road race. As the troubled build-up to the pandemic-postponed Games gave way to the first full day of competition, China secured victories in shooting and weightlifting. Elsewhere on Saturday, world number one Novak Djokovic stayed on course for a Golden Grand Slam with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien in the opening round of the men’s singles tournament. Djokovic, who has already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles this year, is bidding to win all four majors in a calendar year as well as Olympic gold, emulating the feat of German great Steffi Graf in 1988.
