India and Pakistan’s on-field rivalry has always been evident through not just the game, but also the fans that gather to see the clash of the Asian nations. The teams have faced each other a total of seven times in one-day matches while competing for the title of world champions. However, India has shown dominance so far by not letting Pakistan win any of the seven matches.
1992 World Cup in Australia
The Indian team, which was led by Mohammad Azharuddin in 1992, faced Pakistan in Sydney. While the Indian captain scored 32 runs in the innings, the charge against Pakistan was headed by the scores of Ajay Jadeja and Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 46 and 54 runs respectively.
1996 World Cup in Bangalore
The match, which was played on March 9, is considered to be one of the most memorable ones. The teams met in the World Cup quarter final. Navjot Singh Sindhu and Sachin Tendulkar kept India afloat with a partnership that amounted to 90 runs. On the other hand, Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram sustained an injury hours before the crucial game and was forced to pull out. India won by 39 runs.
1999 World Cup in the United Kingdom
India and Pakistan were still led by the same captains, both of who were determined to secure a win for their team. While Azharuddin scored a total of 59 runs in the game, Rahul Dravid made 61 runs off 89 deliveries. Pakistan tumbled halfway through the game and lost all their wickets at a score of 180.
2003 World Cup in South Africa
Pakistan was to bat first in the game and set a score of 273 after playing 50 overs. Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar scored a ton before being dismissed by Ashish Nehra. India reached the target in about 45 overs, securing their fourth win over Pakistan in World Cup games.
2011 World Cup in India
The 2011 clash between the teams was won by India with a margin of 29 runs after dismissing all Pakistani players with just one ball remaining. Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 85 runs, was awarded with the Player of the Match award.
2015 World Cup in Australia
Indian skipper Virat Kohli led India’s innings with a knock that yielded 107 runs from 126 deliveries. He was also given the Player of the Match award. India won the game with a margin of 76 runs.
2019 World Cup in the United Kingdom
The winner of the match was decided with the Duckworth method (DNL) after rain interrupted the game. India won by a margin of 89 runs.
India has also clashed with Pakistan in the T20 World Cup four times so far, also winning every match. The 2007 T20 World Cup, which was also the first of its kind, was played between the two teams. India won the game by a margin of five runs. The remaining three matches happened in 2009, 2012 and 2016.
