Suryakumar Yadav’s fifty aided by a 46-run knock by skipper Shikhar Dhawan helped India post 164 runs in the first innings against Sri Lanka. Dushmantha Chameera picked two wickets giving away 24 runs for the hosts.

India started the innings losing debutant Prithvi Shaw off the very first ball. Dhawan, Samson and Suryakumar then played the recovery act but India lacked a blockbuster finish. As the innings progressed, Sri Lankan bowlers, especially Dushmantha Chameeram(2/24) and Wanindu Hasaranga (2/28) choked the visitors. Sanju Samson played a 27-run hand in 20 balls.

Hardik Pandya (10 runs off 12 balls), Ishan Kishan (20*) and Krunal Pandya (3*) couldn’t exploit the death overs and India finished at 164.

Given the conditions, anything over 160 runs is a good score to defend. The pitch got slower with every passing over. Sri Lanka are the more cheery side after half-time. However, they will have to tackle the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
